Was headhunted by AG Manly to be chief executive (designate) to manage change and the company’s development and expansion. Initially responsible, as commercial director, for the improvement of commercial disciplines, company performance and profitability, and to develop business expansion and the appropriate management structure. Left the company on the best of terms after it became evident that the Board had not anticipated the extent of the changes recommended and were unwilling to accept their implementation.

Commercial Manager for Bovis Europe, responsible for the commercial affairs of all UK and European operating divisions and companies.

 

1988 – 1996

Divisional Commercial Director for Bovis Construction Ltd, responsible for the south and south-west division, which was a £400 million company, and reporting directly to the managing director and the main board. Was also responsible for the commercial activities of specialist companies, Bovis Crowngap and Bovis Lelliot, as well as the European projects of the company’s national clients.

 

 

Divisional Commercial director for Yeoman & Partners, a subsidiary shop fitting company of Bovis. Despite severe commercial restructuring and stronger disciplines it proved impossible to continue to trade the company and a decision was taken to close the company’s operations both in the UK and overseas. The company was dormatised and a £6 million investment returned to the group.

Promoted to Divisional Commercial Director for Bovis Construction Ltd., responsible for all divisional finance and commercial affairs, working with the divisional managing director on a turnover of £355 million covering retail, commercial and industrial projects. Also had commercial responsibility for the Scottish Regional office. Became responsible for the amalgamation of two major divisions of Bovis to facilitate continued profitability in a difficult construction market. Further restructuring of Bovis UK into Bovis Europe involved the combining of two major divisions of Bovis. These were established as a grouping of individual business centres handling major national accounts (M&S, Tesco, LUL, Railtrack, Safeway).

 

1986 – 1988

Senior Executive for Bovis Construction Ltd with commercial responsibility for two major schemes in London and the south-east – the £150 million banking/dealer facilities development for Nomura and the £145 Watford Town Centre development for Capital and Counties. Both ran concurrently.

 

1982 – 1986

Commercial Manager for George Wimpey Limited for the design, construction and fitting out of the £180 million Royal Hospital for the Sultan of Oman on a fully financed turnkey project.

1981 – 1982

Assistant Regional Quantity Surveyor for George Wimpey Limited in Jordan, Egypt, Kenya and The Sudan. Based in Amman, work ranged from Palace refits to potash schemes.

1976 – 1981

Commercial Manager for Balfour Beatty Limited on the Songea-Makambako Road Project in Tanzania, a £28 million target cost contract financed by the ODA.

 

 

Resident in the UK before further overseas appointments with Balfour Beatty Limited to undertake contract developments, turnkey project proposals, including liaison with corporate and treasury for Exports Credits Guarantees and Eurocurrency Loans.

 

 

Company surveyor for Balfour Beatty Limited, with responsibility for all surveying/commercial activities on all Company contracts in The Gambia. Annual turnover circa £8 million.

 

1967 – 1972

Early construction experience involved various building and civil engineering projects with several construction companies (Nott Brodie, Murphy, Try, Mitchell Bros., and Kinnear Moodie).
